Training of key persons for energy conversion of food waste in the Philippines (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Zero Emission Human Resource Development Project (AOTS-subsidized project))
summary
The International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT) hosted a seven-day delegation from Sunday, October 27 to Saturday, November 2, consisting of government officials and business executives from the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines ("DOST") and other government agencies.
The theme of this training course was food waste-to-energy technology. During the course, the trainees visited relevant institutions in Mie and Aichi Prefectures and attended lectures.
On the last day of the training, the participants exchanged opinions on issues and prospects for future technology transfer from Japan to the Philippines.
Background and Objectives
While the Philippines is experiencing remarkable economic growth, it is also experiencing a number of environmental problems. In particular, the management of organic waste, including food waste, is a major issue. In the province of Pampanga, the target area of this project, organic waste accounts for about half of the waste generated, much of which is disposed of in landfills without proper treatment, and the naturally occurring biogas (methane gas) contributes to global warming.
With the goal of promoting Waste To Energy (WTE), DOST promotes food waste-to-energy technology to businesses and local governments in the Philippines.
This project was implemented based on DOST's request, with the aim of deepening the trainees' understanding of Japanese food waste-to-energy technology and administrative systems, and to serve as a foundation for future technology transfer from Japan to the Philippines.
